Our publishing policy

We reserve the right not to publish any individual contribution we receive and to edit contributions as we see fit, particularly where they contravene our publishing policy.

Although this project will contain a macabre theme, please keep the following in mind:

• The content is open to your interpretation. We ask that stories are not overtly violent, contain explicit sexual matter or use extreme bad language, but otherwise your imagination should run free
• Stories should not exceed 5,000 words if possible. That said, we will not reject a story if it does slightly exceed this
• Ensure that you read through your story carefully before submitting it. Check for spelling errors and good grammar. Stories which require *heavy* editing may be rejected
• Your writing background is irrelevant to us, each story will stand on its own merit no matter what the writer’s history

We will not publish:

• stories that are  unlawful, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually explicit or racially offensive;
• any comments we believe could lead to court action including defamatory comments, comments that risk prejudicing on-going or forthcoming court proceedings or which break a court injunction;
• any comments which incite people to commit any crime, including incitement of racial hatred  

Please do not:

• send us content which you've copied in whole or part from someone else and which you don't own the copyright to.
• use excessive bad language – it will be edited out
• use the names of, or include personal details of, real people
• send us advertising or promotional materials

The copyright agreement

All writers retain the copyright and rights to their stories. Headlong however reserves the right to publish the work in the 'Dark Hoard' book and use excerpts in promotional material. By sending us your work, you agree to grant Headlong a perpetual, royalty-free, right to use and modify your contribution.
By submitting your contribution to this site, you also indemnify Headlong against all losses, costs, claims, demands, legal fees, damages and other expenses that may be incurred as a result of publishing your contribution. 

Should we be approached by a publisher or other party who wish to use your work we will contact you. We shall be entitled to a 20% share of any sum you receive by way of royalty or commission or otherwise from any such publisher or other party.

About your privacy   

We will publish your name and a photograph but not your email address, unless you give us permission.
Headlong will not under any circumstances sell or give the personal details or email address to any third party but be aware that in exceptional circumstances, such as where your submissions breach the law, we could be legally obliged to reveal your identity to relevant authorities.
